Sarah Junior School is a pre-primary school for 65 children in the Mashimoni village in Kibera slum, Nairobi, Kenya. The school is funded by a charity based in the United Kingdom. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, home to an estimated 1 million people, most of whom are children.〔("Kibera in Brief" ), SHOFCO, April 2009.〕 The School was founded in September 2006 by British teenager Sarah Shucksmith, in partnership with a small group of Kiberan locals who teach the children and manage the school. Sarah Junior School is a registered CBO (Community Based Organisation) in Kenya and a registered charity in the United Kingdom (charity number 119135). ==Purpose== To establish Sarah Junior School in Kibera as a kindergarten school for 60 children aged 3 to 6 years old. To remove any financial barriers that discriminate against children living in extreme poverty in Kibera from going to school, such as buying stationery, a uniform, and paying for a desk and exam fees. To provide two hot meals a day to all pupils in the recognition that sufficient nutrition is necessary for the health, welfare and learning ability of the children.
